Conservation
At Tonga Travels we believe that conservation is the most important aspect of any endeavor.
While diving we keep an eye out for any tagged animals and work closely with marine conservation organisations, like the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation, to ensure that our activities benefit the ecosystem and locals as much as possible. Our long term goal is to get a sense for the changes in the reefs health and to keep detailed records of our observations in dive logs so that detailed records exist of direct observations of the reef.
Divers can be a cause for concern for some conservationists, as we can easily damage the reef with our fins. At Tonga Travels we know how important it is to minimize the damage divers do to a reef, and so any newly qualified divers are watched closely and helped by our dive professionals to maintain their buoyancy. Any diver wishing to get their Advanced Open Water qualification with us must also do the peak performance buoyancy dive. On this dive students experiment with their buoyancy in an area where their impacts is minimal, to gain a better feel for buoyancy control and stop them from damaging the reef with accidental contact. This dive is also a lot of fun, trying to run on the bottom of the sea is always a challenge!
We request that our visitors viewing Humpback Whales submit any photos they take of the Whale's flukes to the Tongan Fluke Collective to help them further their research.

To ensure the protection of the habitat, pollution of every kind will be kept to a minimum. Noise pollution will be reduced as there are only a few people staying at the lodge at one time, and we only run our compressor during the daytime. Keeping noise pollution down is important as the local wildlife on Lifuka should not be disturbed by humans, and we do not want to disturb the peaceful atmosphere. Fuel pollution will be reduced as we on have two boats and they are equipped with Yamaha In-Line four stroke engines. We have chosen to use these engines as they are highly eco-friendly – they have been certified from the California Air Resources Board (the ‘clean air agency’) with a three star rating for ultra-low emission and they meet all federal EPA requirements.
