Giving back

Working with the locals

At Tonga Travels we are reliant on the local people for every aspect of our operation. We invest heartily in improving and widening the skill sets of not just our workforce but the community as a whole. This practice ensures improved prospects for all our employees and creating a sustainable, welcoming and skill-orientated team to guarantee your stay is the best it can be for all involved.

By sourcing our food and resources as locally as possible, we aim to keep as much of the money within the local economy other than going overseas. This supports the local community much better in the long term rather than just providing jobs.

Education Centre

We have created our very own education and training centre in conjunction with the Mainstreaming of Rural Development Innovation (MORDI) Tonga Trust and the Tonga National Youth Congress (TNYC) two non-governmental organisations (NGO’s). We use centre in a number of ways: to train our visitors in the importance of biodiversity, good diving technique, local culture and crafts but we also use it for training our own staff in all aforementioned important skills needed for their respective jobs such as catering, hospitality and English top up sessions. Working with the NGO’s we also offer up the centre for training of the locals, the TNYC works mostly in raising awareness and encouraging the production of organic farming while teaching good farming practice. MORDI works with us on a wider scale providing teaching in environmental sustainability, health and disease, sea safety and small engine maintenance.
